Over the last few years, car manufacturers have been coming out with many new auto safety features. Today’s cars are becoming safer due to advances in technology. These new features will help keep you safer during your drive.

Auto Safety Features: What Are They?

Adaptive Cruise Control

One of the newer auto safety features is adaptive cruise control. This feature keeps a vehicle a specific distance from the car in front of it by applying the brakes if it gets too close. It works by using forward-looking radar. Once there is sufficient space in front of the car again, it will return to it’s set cruising speed. This feature can help react to slower cars ahead, even if you are driving too fast to react on your own.

Backup Cameras

As of May 2018, federal law required all new vehicles be equipped with a rear view monitoring system. However, if your vehicle does not have a backup camera, aftermarket models are readily available. Typically, this comes in the form of a backup camera. These cameras make it easier to park or backup, typically including lines that indicate spaces and distances.

Blind Spot Monitoring

Accidents can happen if you don’t know what is in your blind spots. A relatively new auto safety feature is blind spot monitoring. This system uses sensors that are mounted on the side mirrors or rear bumper to detect vehicles in the adjacent lanes. If the sensors do find something, the car will give you an audible or visual warning. In some systems, there are even cameras that will show you the blind spot area.

Lane Monitoring

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) are two variants of lane monitoring systems. These auto safety features use forward-facing cameras to monitor the lane lines around your vehicle. The LDW will give drivers an audible or visual warning if their vehicle is about to cross a lane marker when their turn signal is not on.

On the other hand, LKA will provide automatic steering or braking to keep a vehicle in its lane. If a car starts to drift outside of its lane without a turn signal activated, the car will automatically pull you back into the lane.

As you can see, there are so many new types of auto safety features available now. These features should provide a safer drive, and reduce the number of accidents. As time goes on, these systems will be found on more and more vehicles.
